This is our main fund raiser. Held on the 2^nd Sat. in October at Lazy Brook Park.  Food & craft vendors, 2 bands and several wineries.

 

Rotarians distributed dictionaries to third grade students in the Tunkhannock Area School District.

 

Every year on Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving), Tunkhannock Rotarians collect monetary donations from shoppers at various shopping locations within Tunkhannock to buy toys for kids for Christmas. Shoppers are offered candy canes as a treat for their donations. The money raised is divided between Interfaith Friends and Wyoming County Children & Youth to buy Christmas gifts for children in need.

 

Twice a year, usually in the Spring and Fall, Tunkhannock Rotarians clean-up a 2 mile stretch of road side. Since 1997, the Tunkhannock Club has participated in the Adopt a Highway Program.  In the Fall of 2023, the Club adopted a new 2-mile section of roadway from Dunkin Donuts to the NAPA field. Although much of the material found is garbage and debris, other more interesting things have also been found such as money, shoes, pants and miscellaneous items.

 

A booth is set up to promote Rotary and publicize and sell our first Harvest & Wine Festival tickets.

 

The Wyoming County Drug Take Back Days (coordinated by the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency - DEA) take place twice a year in the Tunkhannock Area. Although the Wyoming County District Attorney’s (DA) office runs this program, and is responsible for the collection, security and proper disposal of the drugs, the Tunkhannock Rotary Club helps the DA’s office educate the public about this important program to clean old, expired or no longer needed prescription drugs out of people’s medicine cabinets.

 

 

Every July 3rd, the Tunkhannock Rotary Club presents an outstanding Fireworks display for everyone in Tunkhannock and surrounding areas. The evening begins with music, a brief military salute and then the fireworks display. Families and friends picnic on the lawn and enjoy each others company. Donations are gratefully accepted to help defray costs but it is free for everyone.

 

From 1981 (first relays on April 25, 1981) until 2012, the Club hosted local junior (1991-2012) and senior (1981-2007) high school track teams at the annual Rotary Relays, which were Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association sanctioned. Although for a time both junior and senior high school teams competed in the events, toward the end of this timeframe (2008-2012), the event focused only on junior high school teams. Although cuts for school sports funding, put the Relays on hiatus for several years, the Relays were back on track until 2024, when dates and volunteer needs became problematic. Athletes from all over Northeastern PA participate in different track and field events.

 

The goal of the Josh the Baby Otter Water Safety Program is to educate children with a fun and simple message:  To stay away from water unless accompanied by an adult. “Josh the Baby Otter” was created to help children comprehend and remember this important message. Ultimately, the aim is to create a water safety behavior for all children that will be passed on from generation to generation.
